Celebrity Hair Looks - Side-Sweeping Styles

Sweeping hair to one side is often the simplest way to add extra glamour to your look.  It's also great for showing off back-detailing on your dress or outfit if you don't feel like wearing your hair up.

Take a look through the different styles to find one you like and see if it suits you, with everything from Hollywood curls to great day looks.

The Look - Beautiful side-swept bun

Seen At - The 2011 MET Institute Gala

Creating her gorgeous look, Ashley was styled by Ted Gibson, who began by applying Ted Gibson Hairsheet all over Ashley’s damp hair, to give it volume and shine.

Next, he used a brush, dividing the hair into 1 ½ inch sections before using a flat iron to create soft waves.

He created a deep side part, then pulled all her hair to one side, securing it with a bungee elastic, before twisting the hair onto itself to create a chignon look.

A spray of Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray finished her look.

The Look - Side-swept curls

To recreate Milla's glam look, first apply some styling mousse or serum to damp hair before blow-drying with a round brush to add a touch of height and body.

Set the hair with rollers, pointing up and away from the face.

Once the hair has cooled and curls have set, remove the rollers and create a deep side part on the side of your choice.

Whichever side has the least amount of hair, sweep around behind the neck and over the shoulder, using some  crisscrossed hair pins to keep the style in place.

Let the curls on the other side fall naturally, and finish by misting the look with some strong finishing spray.

Best Actress winner Natalie had her romantic side-swept Oscar 'do created by Frederic Fekkai stylist Didier Malige.

Creating the look, he began by applying an anti-frizz product, and volumizer to Natalie's hair before blow-drying it with a round brush.

The hair was then curled in large sections using a 1-inch barrel curling iron.

The bottom layers of the hair were gently back-combed so the style would have hold; then the hair was swept to one side and secured with bobby pins.

Fekkai Sheer Hairspray was then applied for added hold.

For her glam awards side bun look, Natalie was styled by Mark Townsend.

First he sprayed some Biolage Bodifying Spray Gel into Natalie's hair while damp then her blow-dried with a medium-sized round brush.

Taking 2-3 inch sections of hair, he sprayed each with Vavoom Gold Heat Iron-In Control before wrapping it around a 1-inch curling iron.

For a little extra texture he also added a small amount of Vavoom Design Pulse Glow To Pieces Shine Wax and raked it through her hair with his fingers.

For the style, a side parting was created with Natalie's layers swept across her face, then Mark gathered her hair into a ponytail behind her left ear and braided it before securing with an elastic band.

Taking the secured end, he looped it around the base of the ponytail and secure with some bobby pins.

For a glam finishing touch, he added a pin from Jennifer Behr at the top of the bun.

The Look - Super-pretty side-swept bun

Seen at - The 2010 Emmy Awards

Creating this look, Keri was styled by Jonathan Hanousek.

Keri's hair is naturally curly but instead of straightenening them out, they were enhanced and refined for this look with a touch of MoroccanOil Light before being blow-dried with a diffuser.

Extra refinement was added with a one-inch barrel curling iron wrapped around random curls.

Jonathon then sprayed on MoroccanOil Glimmer Spray and raked it through her hair with his fingers, breaking up her hairline.

Gathering the hair back, he pulled it into a side ponytail that pinned into a loose bun.

Frederic Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray was applied; then, the finishing touch: a flower adornment from Jennifer Behr.

The Look - Femme Fatale Waves

Seen at - The 2010 MET Gala

For this look it's best to start with a smooth, shiny base so apply some anti-frizz cream to damp hair and create a side-part.  Section off the front section of the larger side of the part and wrap it up around a large roller - the hair should be wrapped up facing the side, rather than the front.

Blow-drying using a brush on the rest of the hair to smooth out the lengths.

Once dry, tong the rest of the hair, taking large sections at a time and wrapping them around the barrel vertically - letting each cool after creating.

Remove the roller and position your hair into style, sweeping all the hair over to one side; using a little smoothing balm on the other, tucking it behind the ear.

This style looks product-laden but it shouldn't be; try not to use any hairspray unless you really feel like you'll need it.

For the 2010 Oscars Cameron opted for an old-Hollywood style hairdo but gave it a fresher more modern look.

Her hairstylist, Loni Vigi used some Liquid Professional Volumizing Catalyst spray before blow-drying to give some volume and oomph. A round brush was also used whilst drying to add some body and bounce.

Once it was almost totally dry the hair was sectioned and curled using large hot rollers.

So Cameron wasn't left with lots of strong curls or ringlets the hair was brushed through to soften them.

To show of her beautiful strapless gown Cameron's hair was swept over to one side, and a liberal spritz of L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray finished.

Vigi used the Velecta Paramount Professional 4000I Hair Dryer.

The Look - Messy Fishtail Braid

Color - Dark brown with light golden brown sections framing the face

Seen At - The January 2011 Premiere of The Roommate

For this look, most of the length will be tied together so straightening and blow-drying isn't an absolute must.

Gather all your hair as if making a low ponytail at the back then swwp it round to one side.  If you have some shorter lengths that fall down around the side it's fine - this style isn't meant to look perfect.

When creating Minka's fishtail braid keep it loose at the top, making it tighter as you near the ends.

Leave a some length free, then add it a discreet elastic to secure the look.

Again, the braid doesn't have to be perfectly neat - Minka has layered hair so some of the shorter lengths has sprigged out adding to the messy look.

For Kate's glam Hollywood waves, begin by applying some smoothing balm to damp hair.

Create a slightly off-centre parting and blow-dry smooth using a round brush.

Using a large-barrel curling iron, take large sections of hair at a time and wrap them under and away from the face.

Brush the style to finish and secure with a mist of hairspray.

For this look, Jennifer was styled by Adir Abergel, who first prepped her wet hair with Fekkai Coiff Shape Set and Mist for added texture (prepping with  MoroccanOil Treatment is great instead, if you have curly hair).

The hair was parted to the side, directly above the end of her eye.

Adir then blow-dried using a round brush; taking small sections at a time, pinning each one back as he went.  The hair was then allowed to set for about 10 minutes

Using a 1-inch curling iron he curled all Jennifer's hair (this probably isn't necessary as most is going up - the loose curls at the front are all you're likely to need).

To style, then hair was gathered back with a sections  left loose at the front to frame the face.

The style was completed with a mist of Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray.

Seen At - On Rachel McAdams at the December 2009 Premiere of Sherlock Holmes

In creating this look, first apply some volumizing spray  to wet hair.

Blow-dry, with some medium-large sized velcro rollers to create volume and shape at the top of the head.

Allow the rollers to cool and curls to set before removing them then tease back into place with your fingers, back-combing a little and keeping as much volume on top as possible before gathering the hair at the back.

Rachel's hair was French-braided from below the left ear down the length and secured with a transparent band - don't worry about making the braid too neat; you can see from the pic Rachel's isn't and it still looks great.

Finish the look with hairspray, especially at the top, but try not to apply too much as this look shouldn't be rock hard.

The Look - Sleek Fish-Tail Braid

For this look, most of the length will be tied together so straightening and blow-drying isn't an absolute must, just make-sure you have smooth hair and some volume at the top.

Gather all your hair as if making a low ponytail at the back then sweep it round to one side.

Leave some loose at the front to frame the face a little.

When creating the fishtail braid make sure to keep it as tight as possible all the way down - fishtail braids are tricky so you might need some practice if you're planning this look for an event or night out.

Once you've created the braid, leave a little length free at the end, then add it a discreet elastic to secure the look.

For this look, most of the length will be tied together so straightening and blow-drying isn't an absolute must.

Gather all your hair as if making a low ponytail at the back then sweep it round to one side.  If you have some shorter lengths or layers that fall down around the side that's okay - this style doesn't have to look perfect.

Create a loose fishtail braid in the length of the ponytail.

Leave a little length loose at the bottom and use a discreet elastic to secure the braid in place

Going uber glam, Blake added a gold hair adornment into her hair; get the look with the Golden Leaves and Central Crystal Flower Hair Comb; sliding it into the top of your ponytail at the back.

The Look - Long side plait

Seen at - An event in January 2011

For a smooth, polished looking base like Jessica's, first blow-dry your hair using a paddle brush.*

Create a deep side-part on whichever side you prefer and sweep all hair across to one side.

Leave some hair loose to frame the face, then braid the rest into a wide plait before securing at the end with a hair elastic.

This is a great look but isn't too pristine , so don't worry too much if your plait has loose sprigs etc.  Jessica's has them but she still looks great.

*If your hair is naturally straight you might not feel the need to do this.

Leave some hair loose to frame the face, then braid the rest into a wide plait before securing at the end with a discreet hair elastic.

Isabeli had some extensions added to her ponytail for extra length and thickness.

This look is very dishevelled so it doesn't matter if some hair come free from the plait or at the back.

*You can also enhance some light texture and wave by applying a little texturising spray onto your hands and scrunching to create some waves at the top of the style before working on the plait.
